Waldo V. Martinez passed into the loving arms of Our Lord on Friday, September 1, 2023 in San Antonio, at the age of 86. Waldo was born to Bettie & Federico Martinez in Floresville, on October 11, 1936.
Waldo attended and graduated from Floresville High School in 1957. In the same year, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves and served until 1963. On July 1, 1961, he married his high school sweetheart, Lydia Munoz of Floresville. They celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary this year.
Waldo worked for the Texas Department of Transportation for 35 years retiring as a Maintenance Supervisor. Waldo was a proud honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus Council 6641 for 42 years and served as Treasurer for over 20 years. He was also an active member of the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Assembly 2145 and served as Faithful Purser for many years.
Waldo was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He also served on the Sacred Heart School Board. Waldo’s faith was shown through his involvement in many organizations at Sacred Heart Church, serving as a Marriage Preparation Instructor, Pastoral Council member, founding team member of the Men’s A.C.T.S. Retreats, St. Vincent de Paul volunteer, Faith Formation teacher and a Mass Usher.
His community involvement included being a longtime troop leader with the Floresville Boy Scouts and also volunteered as a coach and umpire with the Floresville Little League.
Waldo was preceded in death by his parents, Bettie & Federico Martinez, and his siblings, Fred Martinez and Dora Plair. He is survived by his beloved wife, Lydia Martinez and his children, Alberto “Al” Martinez (Cheryl), Albina Martinez, Alma Martinez (Andy Krapf), Anita Rivera (Joel), and Angela Martinez. Waldo also leaves behind his grandchildren; Nick Martinez (Callie), Katelyn Hogg (Simon), Jeremy Martinez, Devin Johnson (Clarissa), Elias Krapf, Dominic Rivera, Lia Rivera, Nathanael Trevino, Noah Trevino and great-granddaughter Camila Johnson. He is also survived by his brothers; Rudy Martinez, Peter Martinez (Irene) and numerous godchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Waldo left behind a beautiful legacy of love and faith and will be greatly missed.
A Visitation will be held at Franklin Funeral Home at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, September 5, 2023. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Wednesday, September 6, 2023 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and interment will immediately follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation to Sacred Heart Catholic School in loving memory of Waldo.
