Shirley Dudley, lovingly known as “Granny Shirley” to her beloved Stockdale community, died peacefully with her family by her side, on December 16, 2025 in Stockdale, Texas at the age of 89. She was born to Robert L. Humphries and Pauline Hutton Humphries on November 29, 1936.
Shirley made her home in Stockdale, Texas, a place she loved deeply and served wholeheartedly for many years. She was a woman of many roles and endless energy: a nurse, a restaurant owner, a substitute teacher, and, by all accounts, the unofficial “Mayor of Main Street”. Shirley took pride in being part of a community grounded in faith, fellowship, and service.
Above all else though, she was Granny Shirley. She was famous for showing up, no matter the distance, the weather, or the score, driving all over the state of Texas to support her grandchildren at every event she could. She was always the loudest voice in the stands and the proudest smile in the crowd. Shirley had a heart of gold and a gift for making people feel seen, welcomed, and encouraged. She loved her family deeply and her community just as fiercely. The impact of that love will live on in the many lives she touched.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Robert L. Humphries & Pauline Hutton Humphries; her devoted husband, John Milton Dudley; and her beloved daughter, Denise Dudley Voelkel. She is survived by her children, David Lee Dudley (Mona), Debi Williams, and Donna Baggs (David). Granny Shirley will be forever cherished by her grandchildren, Angela Williams, Brady Baggs (Brianne), Bryan Williams (Salina), Christopher Dudley (Vicki), Colby Baggs (Kara), Jason Dudley, Staci Baggs Hartl (Justin), Tanner Voelkel (Amy), Tara Voelkel Lynn, and Jasmine Williams, along with her 18 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her siblings, Polly Stryker and Robert L. “Bobby” Humphries (Jimmie Lou). Shirley’s life was a blessing to all who knew her and she will be greatly missed by the Stockdale community and the numerous family and friends who knew and loved her.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, January 3, 2026 at the First Baptist Church Stockdale Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Stockdale Athletic Association in Shirley’s honor.
