Frank Martinez Sr.

June 4, 1936 — October 9, 2024

Frank “Chico” Martinez, Sr. went into the loving arms of the Lord on October 9, 2024 in his San Antonio home at the age of 88 years old.  Frank was born to loving parents, Julia Garza Martinez and Fidencio Martinez in Floresville, Texas on June 4, 1936.   Frank spent his early years in Floresville, but was also a longtime resident of San Antonio, Texas where he raised his beloved family.  He was a man of faith and former congregant at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.  He later joined the congregation at Mission San Jose Catholic church and was a member of the Mission San Jose Men’s Club.  Frank was also a proud veteran of the United States Army and after his service ended he continued working for the United States government at Kelly Air Force Base.  After retirement, his lifelong passion for baseball took center stage.  After many years of coaching the youth in his community while playing in community leagues himself, he opened Frank’s Trophies and Sporting Goods..  His love for the game led him to play well into the senior leagues.  Through each season of his long, beautiful life he set a shining example of what it means to be a friend, a teammate, a father, and a husband.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Fidencio Martinez, Julia Garza Martinez, and Carmen Garcia Martinez.  He was also preceded by his siblings, Julia Martinez, Antonio “Tony” Martinez, and Billy Ray Martinez.  Frank is survived by his beloved wife, Guadalupe “Lupe” Courvier Martinez, and his children, Mario Martinez, Julia Martinez, Frank Martinez Jr (Sandra), and Marcus Martinez.  He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Joshua De La Garza, Andrew De La Garza, Cathryn Martinez, and Amry Martinez.  He also leaves behind his siblings, Joe Martinez (Lily), Valdemar Martinez (Argentina), and Angie Pena (Jerry) as well as numerous family and friends.

A visitation will be held at 9:30 am on Monday, October 28 2024 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.   A rosary will be recited at 10:00 am and Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am.  Interment will directly follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.   The Martinez family would like to thank everyone for their kind words and help in keeping Frank’s precious memories alive.
